<<Red Mage Wandering>>

V'reya Treun

Quick-witted, sharp-tongued, and rarely seen without coffee, V’reya is as likely to flirt, argue, or drag you into some ill-advised scheme as she is to offer a surprisingly thoughtful piece of advice. Beneath the bravado lies a woman with old ghosts, dangerous curiosities, and a stubborn habit of caring too much.

Scholar Turned Adventurer

Background

Orphaned at a young age, V'reya was brought to Old Sharlayan during the exodus. Surrounded by scholars and their work, she developed a natural curiosity and a love of learning. Her own magic, however, was far more difficult to understand. Her aether was unusually volatile and an amulet she had worn since childhood was meant to keep it under control. She was never given much explanation about the amulet or why she needed it, only that she was never to remove it.During her adolescence, V'reya encountered a wandering red mage who recognized that suppressing her aether was not the same as teaching her to control it. He introduced her to the principles of aetheric regulation, giving her the foundation to develop her own unconventional approach to spellcasting. Though she became more capable of directing her magic, she never fully understood the nature of her aether or why it behaved so differently from what she had studied. At seventeen, V'reya earned her place at the Studium, where her studies eventually led her to a devastating discovery. The revelation left her angry and heartbroken and she discarded the amulet that had been a part of her life for as long as she could remember. In the years that followed she threw herself into drinking, drugs, and fleeting romances, using the excitement and distraction to avoid confronting her past. Despite her increasingly reckless behavior, she graduated through natural aptitude and stubborn determination before leaving Sharlayan to pursue a life of adventuring. Now, V'reya is making an effort to put her life back together. She still enjoys excitement and has a tendency to act before thinking, but she is beginning to recognize the difference between doing something because she wants to and doing it simply to avoid being alone with her thoughts. She remains determined to understand her magic on her own terms, even as questions about her parents and the purpose of the amulet remain unanswered. For now, she is focused on building a life she can be proud of, though neither her past nor the mysteries surrounding her aether have been entirely put to rest.

Personality

V’reya is a spark of controlled chaos—quick-witted, impulsive, and driven by instinct as much as intellect. She thrives in the moment, chasing excitement and challenge with a confidence that borders on reckless.Curious by nature, she has little patience for stagnation and an unfortunate attraction to the unusual, the complicated, and the potentially disastrous. Sociable and effortlessly irreverent, she enjoys the company of others and has a particular talent for making herself memorable. Her humor can be disarming, her charm deliberate or entirely spontaneous, and her willingness to challenge convention makes her difficult to pin down.Independent to a fault, V’reya prefers to approach problems on her own terms, trusting her ability to improvise over the comfort of a carefully laid plan. She is perceptive enough to recognize more than she lets on, though her confidence can make her stubborn when a situation calls for patience or restraint. She has a habit of meeting expectations with a raised brow and a question of her own, and rarely takes the straightforward path when a more interesting one presents itself. For all her bravado there is more to V’reya than meets the eye. Humor and sarcasm come easily, often serving as a convenient distraction when someone gets a little too close to something she would rather keep to herself. Restless by nature, she is inclined to chase the next challenge rather than linger too long in one place or one state of mind.

Other Details

- She drinks coffee like others breathe air. Her order? Three creams, two sugars- She writes in the margins of her books, especially if she disagrees with the author. Her academic notes are excellent. Her commentary on them, however, is significantly less professional.- Her favorite genre is romance and she keeps a copy of her favorite book on her at all times.-Her bag contains at least three things she forgot she owned, one item she cannot identify, and something someone lent her several months ago. She insists she knows exactly where everything is. She does not.

Abilities

Red Mage Theory
V'reya's approach to magic is unconventional, developed through independent study of red mage philosophy and experimentation after learning its fundamentals from a wandering practitioner. Adopted as a means of regulating her aether, the discipline allows her to channel and direct her magic rather than suppress it. Her technique is unorthodox, favoring instinct and adaptability over strict adherence to tradition.
Aetheric Instability
Though considerably more capable of managing her aether than she once was, V'reya's control is not infallible. Strong emotions, exhaustion, injury, or physical weakness can disrupt her concentration and cause her magic to become erratic. She is generally capable of recognizing the warning signs, but recognizing a problem does not always mean she can prevent it. Pushing beyond her limits risks misdirected spells, uncontrolled discharges, and severe aetheric exhaustion.
Sword and Focus
V'reya fights with a rapier and magical focus, using swordplay to complement and direct her spellcasting. Her movements provide rhythm and structure to her magic, allowing her to weave attacks and spells together with reasonable efficiency. While competent enough to defend herself and hold her own in a fight, her swordsmanship lacks the refinement of a formally trained duelist. She relies on improvisation, opportunism, and magical versatility more than technical mastery.
Improvisational Casting
She is quick to adapt familiar techniques to unfamiliar circumstances, often finding unconventional solutions when a straightforward approach fails. This creativity is one of her greatest strengths, though it can also lead her to attempt things she hasn't properly thought through. Her ingenuity should not be mistaken for limitless magical knowledge or the ability to reproduce any spell she encounters.
Aetheric Theory
Raised among Sharlayan scholars and educated at the Studium, V'reya possesses a keen understanding of aetheric theory and a broad appetite for knowledge. She is particularly comfortable examining unfamiliar phenomena, identifying patterns, and reasoning through the principles behind a spell or magical device. Her theoretical knowledge exceeds her practical experience however, and understanding how something works does not guarantee that she can safely replicate it.
Physical Limitations
V'reya is not a dedicated martial artist or a physical powerhouse. Her endurance and swordsmanship are adequate for an adventurer, but prolonged physical exertion, serious injuries, and drawn-out fights can leave her struggling to maintain both her defenses and her magical control. She is most effective when she can end a confrontation through adaptability and decisive action rather than sheer attrition.

Hooks

Adventurer for Hire
Got a job that needs doing? V'reya can probably manage it—for a fee, of course. A girl has to earn her dinner somehow, and she's rarely picky about honest work. Need an extra sword, someone to investigate a strange occurrence, or simply a willing accomplice for a questionable endeavor? She might be your woman.
Unlikely Scholar
For all her chaotic tendencies, V'reya is a bona fide Studium graduate with a background in aetheric theory. Her academic years were as destructive as they were informative, but the knowledge stuck. Whether you need an extra mind for your research, a second opinion on a curious phenomenon, or someone willing to test a particularly unconventional hypothesis, she may prove a more valuable asset than appearances suggest.
Magic Without a Manual
V'reya never received proper training in the traditional sense. She learned the fundamentals of the red mage practice, took the theory apart, and put it back together in her own fashion. The results are... functional. Proper spellcasters may find her techniques fascinating, deeply concerning, or both. The same could be said of her swordsmanship.
Join Me For a Drink?
Found nursing a drink at the bar, starting a questionable game of Triple Triad, or talking someone into a night they may or may not remember fondly, V'reya is rarely difficult to approach. She's always happy to make a new acquaintance, share a drink, or see where an evening takes her. Whether you become drinking buddies, friendly rivals, or partners in a spectacularly poor decision is anyone's guess.
A Curious Proposition
V'reya has a weakness for the unusual and a habit of asking questions best left unanswered. Strange magical phenomena, unexplained occurrences, and peculiar jobs are all liable to catch her attention. Have something that doesn't quite add up? She might be willing to investigate, especially if the mystery is interesting enough to outweigh the risks.

I started playing FFXIV during the 2020 COVID-19 lockdowns. I got mostly through Heavensward before having a burn out. I picked it up again in 2023 and haven't put it back down since.Writing is a passion of mine and FFXIV has been such an inspiration for roleplay as well as original works. My hope is that all these collected shards of Theia's story can be combined into a single work that I can finally say "I completed"Outside of gaming and my writing, I'm a stay at home mom of 5 wonderful kiddos and a small herd of cats.
